CHAPTER 5

Vacuum erection Devices

This is a case where the name really sounds worse than it is. We’ll spend a few pages giving you some information on this option and you can decide for yourself.

How do vacuum erection devices (VEDs) work?

A VED, sometimes called a vacuum constriction device (VCD), consists of 4 parts:

1. The open end of a clear, tube-like cylinder is slipped over the entire non-erect penis.

2. To help blood enter the penis to get hard, a vacuum pump is attached directly to the cylinder to remove air from inside it.

3. To create a tight seal between the cylinder and the skin at the base of the penis, gel is placed on the circular lip of the open end of the cylinder before it is slipped over the non-erect penis. Applying a gel at the open end of the cylinder should also make it easier to get a good erection. You can avoid having pubic hair painfully pulled by the cylinder if you trim nearby pubic hair beforehand. Trimming pubic hair can also help to prevent a disruption in the seal.

A manual or battery-operated vacuum pump uses negative pressure to pull blood into the penis from the arteries and veins of the body by removing air from inside the cylinder. Because the manual pump requires two hands, one to stabilize the cylinder on the penis and the other to pump the device, most experts favor the one-handed battery-operated option.

4. An appropriately sized constriction band or tension ring is placed on the open end of the cylinder so it can be slipped around the base of the penis once an erection occurs to help maintain hardness. A band or ring that is too small will be painful, and one that is too large will make it difficult to remain sufficiently hard. The band should be placed as close as comfortably possible to the base of the penis because the penis should be hard beyond the area of the constriction band and soft behind it.

As was mentioned, to help create the tightest comfortable seal between the device and the base of the penis, it is important to trim pubic hair in this area before the pump is activated. If the band is placed too far away from the base of the penis, it will cause an unstable soft area to form that could bend and make penetration difficult. Since only minimal oxygen reaches the penis when its blood flow is restricted, the band should be removed within 30 minutes to avoid damaging the penis.

More useful information on VED

What do I need to know in order to buy the right VED?

With a prescription from your doctor, you can pick up a VED from your local pharmacy or order it directly from one of its FDA-approved manufacturers. To avoid risking the health of your penis, do not use a VED or any of its accompanying parts if you did not acquire them with a prescription. You could damage your penis by using items from a non-prescribed VED kit, such as metal or inelastic bands and not the recommended flexible bands.
